4 Ways Air Travel is Changing

Both good and bad, travel by plane is evolving with the times whether due to economic pressure or technological breakthroughs.

Economy seat width is actually decreasing in some airlines, in effort to fit more seats in the cabin and to increase the size of the first class cabin. Coach seats are 17-18 inches, imageswhile first class enjoy 21 inch seats.

Foldable wing tips is a technology breakthrough that allows easier storage in hangers and confined airfields. Generally the tips will rise over the fuselage but the wing-fold depends on the type and function of the plane. Boeing’s 777x features foldable wings, with 71 meters of in-flight wingspan and 64.8 meters grounded and folded.

The urban myth that cell phones interfere with airplane navigation being debunked, cell phone use during the flight is increasingly permitted as the FCC is looking into relaxing the rules. However due to etiquette, cell phone use runs the risk of annoying fellow passengers with phone conversations.

Some airports are becoming their own tourist attractions with shopping and fine dining hubs. Singapore’s Changi International Airport offers movies, Wi-Fi, and free massages, as well as the world’s tallest slide. Vancouver International Airport has aquarium exhibits featuring local sea life, including a 1,800-liter jellyfish tank.
