How to Be Prepared for Work When Vacationing at an Exotic Destination

There are times when a vacation is truly a vacation. No phones, no internet, no worries. Then, there are times when you are expected to actually get some work done while you’re on vacation. Not exactly ideal, but better than being in the office or traveling solely for the job.

Prepare your tech for a business trip with benefits

Before you head out on this “workaction,” it is a good idea to make sure you’re technology is ready to face the obstacles of island or mountain or overseas living. Let’s take a look at some important factors to bear in mind when prepping your tech for a working vacation.

Decide which devices you should bring

Since this isn’t your typical business trip, you may want to consider leaving your laptop at home and taking something smaller and more portable instead. Here are three options to consider:

1. Ultra-Portable Laptop

If you’re either a Windows or Mac user, there are amazingly light and thin computers available that still have speed and processing power to meet your needs.

2. Tablet

The tablets available today, and their accompanying apps, make it possible to pare down to just a screen and still have the ability to get a lot done. If you need it, most tablet also have wireless keyboard options.

3. Larger phone

It seems that bigger is better nowadays when it comes to smartphones. With larger screens and increased speed and power, it is not unreasonable to believe you could work solely from your phone. And you can’t beat the portability.

Keep your devices safe and secure on your trip

We all tend to relax our standards when we go on vacation. While it is perfectly acceptable to unwind and de-stress, you should take care not to let your guard down when it comes to the security of your devices. Be sure you are protecting the devices themselves and also access to them.

There are some simple steps you can take to keep your devices physically safe. Avoid putting them in your checked luggage, lock them in the trunk of your rental car or in the safe of your hotel room, and never leave them unattended in public.

When it comes to access, be sure to use strong password protection. If your device falls into the wrong hands, you want to have preventative measures in place to keep criminals from accessing your personal and professional data. One step you can take is to set up a two-factor authentication, or 2FA. This is a combination of a username and password in addition to a PIN number, pass code, or even a fingerprint. This security measure makes breaching your device much harder.

Another security factor to keep in mind is the networks you use. Rather than risk using a public or free Wi-Fi connection, consider using a VPN (virtual private network) instead.

Check your data and storage before leaving on your trip

If you have brought the right device it won’t do you much good if you can’t connect to the internet. One surefire solution is to use your mobile device as a hotspot. Just be sure to check your data plan before you connect.

You’ll also want to make sure you can access and store the data you need to work on while vacationing. Cloud services are the best option here if you know you’ll have reliable internet connections. It would also be wise to bring along a memory stick to back up any data you work on.

Stay charged during your trip

You would be surprised at how easy it is to forget to pack a charger for all of your mobile devices. Or to pack the wrong charger that is useless to you in a foreign country. The first way to avoid this blunder is to triple check your bags before you leave to make sure you have packed the power sources you need. Also, do a little research before traveling overseas to make sure you have the proper adaptor or charger. Other possible options for frequent travelers is to invest in an extra battery for your phone, an external charger, or even a solar powered charger. Always better to be safe than sorry.

Stop dreaming about a vacation. With access to your work from anywhere, a relaxing getaway is possible.
