23 Interesting and Potentially Useful Travel Facts
It wasn’t easy tracking down all of this cool and weird stuff, but at the end of the day, it was worth it. I learned a lot. As the title suggest, some are useful and others are simply just fun facts, most people don’t know or could care less about, but we guarantee they’ll still be curious about it. We call it useless, but interesting information.
Imagine boarding an airplane, rolling down the runway, then 47 seconds later, landing at your final destination. Well, it happens on a daily basis between the two Scottish islands of Westray and Papa Westray. On a clear day, you can easily see where you’re going and where you have just come from. It is considered the world’s shortest flight. Now on the other hand, imagine sitting in an airplane for 17 hours. (A Saudi Arabian Airlines Boeing 777-300 to be exact) That’s nearly an entire 24 hour day and a little more than half way around the world. I’d imagine folks being a little grumpy after sitting in an economy seat for almost an entire day. That flight is currently the longest non-stop commercial flight in the world.
Honduras is a popular tourist destination. The country has some of the most beautiful, breath taking beaches in the world. However, the flight into Toncontin Airport in Honduras, which is the gateway to paradise, is anything but, and might have you second guessing your vacation choice. It is also known as the world’s most dangerous airports among passengers and the pilots who fly in and out of Toncontin. In fact, the pilots lucky enough to fly into this airport have to be specially certified in addition to having special training. The airport itself is nestled in a steep small valley with a short runway, leaving very little room for error. Certain types of airplanes are banned from landing there and those airlines that do, regularly run out of vomit bags. But the beaches are beautiful and worth it…right?
If you’re sick of beautiful weather and beaches, there is always Oymyakon, Siberia, Russia, where the average temperature is -50 zero and the ground is covered with snow most of the year. It is actually a tourist destination, known for being the coldest habitable place in the world, with a population of nearly 500 people. For something on the opposite end of the spectrum, take a trip to Death Valley, California, which is considered the hottest place on earth and surprisingly, a fairly popular tourist destination. Temperatures reach over 120 degrees throughout the summer on a regular basis. However, the area is also known for its beautiful North American desert landscapes.
Have you recently paid too much for an airline ticket? Was that last minute $4000 business class ticket to Grandmas 80th birthday worth it? The odds are it wasn’t. Image a $250,000 ticket. Well, it’s very real and they are on sale now. So, what’s so cool about these tickets? They take you to space. Yes, Virgin Galactic is currently selling tickets to space and back. Future passengers include George Clooney, Sandra Bullock, Tom Hanks, Angelina Jolie, Ashton Kutcher and Justin Bieber. Knowing my luck, I’d get seated next to Justin Bieber.
