A great religious site in Lisbon is the Igreja de Sao Domingos. An imposing church of gashed pillars, this is where the inquisition’s judgments were pronounced. It has a high altar designed by Friedrich Ludwig in 1748. It survived earthquakes in 1531 and 1755 and a great fire in 1959.
