Travel Guide - Naples

A city of extremes, being in Naples will let you experience grit and glamour, old and new, historical and modern all in one shot. To mark to travelers that they are now in the city extremes, Naples is located in between a sleeping volcano and the steaming Campi Flegrei.

For a large dollop of history and castles, Naples is the place to go. The different castels it has are the Castel Capuano, Castel Dell’Ovo, and Castel Sant’Elmo. The first castel is a Normann castle where the city’s civil courts used to be. It was built by William I to guard the city gate of Porta Capuana. It was later enlarged by King Frederick II. The Castel Dell’Ovo in English is the Castle of the Egg. This was so named because it is believed that Virgil, the Roman poet buried an egg on the site of this castle warning that if the egg breaks, the castle and Naples will fall. The last castle was used in the past as a military prison. It has not seen much of any military action and the biggest blow it received was in 1587. It came not from enemy fire but from a bolt of lightning that hit the gunpowder stock.

There are many religious sites in Napels and some of the most famous are the Chiesa Santa Maria delle Anime Purgatorio Ad Arco, Chiesa Santa Maria in Portico, and the Chiesa Santa Caterina a Formiello. The Anime Purgatorio is a macabre 17th century church guarded by three bronze skulls. On the inside of the church, you will see the altar adorned with two winged skulls. This church was built by a congregation dedicated to praying for the souls in purgatory. Santa Maria in Portico is where you get a dose of baroque architecture. Frescoes by Fabrizio Santafede and Paolo De Matteis adorn the walls of this 17th century church. The most beautiful church in Naple is the Santa Caterina. Relics of martyrs of the Otranto can be found in this ornately decorated Renaissance church.
