Lisbon is the star attraction in Portugal that is spread across the steep hillsides. It boasts of gothic cathedrals, splendid monasteries and charming museums. History and the present meet in Lisbon as both the locals and tourists walk along the seaside that once saw the return of Vasco de Gama.

Visit the remnants of tunnels of what is believed to be a Roman spa. Dating from the 1st century AD, you can go down the depths in the Nucleo Arqueologico via the Banco Comercial Portuquesa on a guided tour by the Museu da Cidade. The Palacio da Assembleia da Republica is Portugal's parliament where one can see the 17th century Benedictine Mosteiro de Sao Bento. The ruins of Convento do Carmo can be found uphill from the Rua Garrett along the Calcada do Sacrament. These ruins are the only remaining example of Gothic architecture in Lisbon. Most of it was destroyed in the 1755 earthquake and is now used as an open-air theatre. On the top of Calcada de Estrela, the Basilica da Estrela rests. It was built in 1790 by the order of Dona Maria to give thanks that she finally had a male heir. This church is neoclassical on the outside and the inside is of a baroque style. A great religious site in Lisbon is the Igreja de Sao Domingos. An imposing church of gashed pillars, this is where the inquisition's judgments were pronounced. It has a high altar designed by Friedrich Ludwig in 1748. It survived earthquakes in 1531 and 1755 and a great fire in 1959.

After walking around in Lisbon's 27 museums and galleries, you can go see the Oceanario. This is Europe's largest aquarium and it is home to 450 species of marine life. See how graceful the giant manta is as it passes by you. Get to see sharks, seadragons, penguins and sea otters too. The Jardim Zoologico is an attractive garden with more than 2000 animals to see. There are row boats and also a dolphin show to please the child with you or the child in you. Get a quick ride up to Lisbon's steepest hills in the Elevador da Bica. It is the most charming ride you can get to the Rua do Loreto through the Santa Catarina district. The Elevador da Gloria takes you to the Miradouro de Sao Pedro de Alcantara viewpoint. It starts out from Praca dos Restauradores, so maybe after a meal, you might want to gets digestion going stimulated by a relaxing view from one of Lisbon's seven hills.

Climate: The climate in Lisbon is one of the warmest that any European capital city has. Lisbon is the number one tourist destination in Portugal as its temperatures are favorable in spring, mild in winter and in summer it rises up to 30 degrees Celsius. There are many ways to travel to and in Lisbon.

Transportation: You can choose to go by bus, train or rent a motorcycle or car. You can also come to Lisbon by water in the catamarans or ferries or by air.
