Once the capital of Italy in the year 1865, Florence reinvented itself but is always a sight to see in Europe. Flooded by art, wonderful architectural buildings at every corner, a busy business center, populated by people proud of their heritage, it still is a jewel.

Let the art in Florence take your breath away in locations like the Basilica di Santa Maria del Carmine, Casa di Dante, Galleria d’Arte Moderna, Galleria degli Uffizi, Macchine di Leonardo or one of the Museos. At the Basilica, you get to view paintings by Masolino da Panicale, Masaccio and Filippino Lippi. The frescoes by Masaccio here are considered his greatest works and it represents the transition from gothic to the new expression of the Renaissance in its early stages. A museum dedicated to Dante’s works, life and times is at Casa di Dante. This is not exactly where Dante was born but is the location where he lived. At the Galleria d’Artte Moderna, art from the 18th and 19th century are presented. They were made by artists of the Florentine Macchiaioli school like Telemaco Signorini and Giovanni Fattori. On the other hand, the Galleria degli Uffizi is home to the Medici family’s private collection. The Macchine di Leonardo showcases the grand scale models of some of Leonardo da Vinci’s inventions like flying machines, a bicycle, a glider, and a tank.

Admire architecture from days past in Florence by viewing the Basilica di Santa Croce. This was completed in 1385 and commemorates some of the great Florentine artists. Michelangelo’s’ tomb here is designed by Vasari. Monuments in memory of Dante and Galileo Galilei can also be found here. Marvel at the holy center of Florence at the Duomo. This was once the site of the town’s Roman temple. Beside the Duomo, the 84.7 meter high Campanile is located. Admire its beauty from the outside and then climb the 414 step inside to be treated to a spectacular view of Duomo and central Florence. Visit the Casa Guidi where Robert and Elizabeth Barrett rented rooms and wrote 1847. The house has been restored in the 19th century style and has some of the items owned by the Brownings on display. The Palace of the Guelph Faction’s Captains is another well preserved piece of medieval Florence. It is a fortified building that stands on land that was taken from the Ghibellines that was later developed by Brunelleschi and Vasari.

Climate: The summers in Florence are very humid and hot. Temperatures average around 31 degrees Celsius in July and August. The best time to go to Florence is in spring or autumn where temperatures are more comfortable and pleasant.

Transportation: Local transportation in Florence consists of taxis, buses and trams. The taxis can be found outside the Stazione di Santa Maria Novella and at other taxi stops around town. A woman travelling alone can also ask for a discount in between the time of 9p.m. to 2a.m. Buses go around the city center and also to areas outside the city. There are also night buses that operate between 9p.m. to 1a.m. You can also rent a car or a bike if you want to discover Florence on your own.

Important for its presence in the middle Ages and the Renaissance, Florence is the capital city of an Italian region called Tuscany. It lies on the River Arno which is well-known for its art and architecture and the cultural heritage it carriers. The millions of tourists and business travelers who visit each year come for the ancient monuments and buildings. One of which is Bartolommeo Ammanati’s Fountain of Neptune located in Piazza della Signoria, the heart of the city. Another popular visited sight is the Ponte Vecchio which translates to Old Bridge, has shops built on the edges of the bridge held by stilts.

Florence is surrounded by plenty of parks, villas and even popular arches. The Arco di Trionfo (Triumphal Arch), in Piazza della Libertà was built in the 18th century and holds statues of mythological deities and heroes. The Giardino dell’Orticultura is popular garden which holds shows and exhibitions for its tourist and also has the largest greenhouse ever built in Italy.
