Stick to carry-on bags only

Sound impossible? Try these techniques:

  • Roll your clothes instead of folding them –  look to YouTube for tutorials
  • Pack clothes that you are can mix and match to create many different outfits – think neutrals
  • Pack solid shampoos, soaps, and deodorants – look for them in natural stores like Lush
  • Stuff socks and underwear into shoes that you pack at the bottom of your bag – but keep shoes to a minimum
  • Keep electronics in your handbag or briefcase – this frees up more room in your luggage

Just can’t get it all in one bag? Utilize the “Bag Drop Only” line that is typically available right outside on the drop-off lanes at airports. This eliminates waiting with the people who have not yet checked in for their flights.

Get to the airport early

There is no reason you should ever have to be that person who must beg fellow travelers to line-jump because you’re boarding in 10 minutes and still haven’t made it through security. There is a reason airlines suggest to arrive 2-3 hours early to your flights. Utilize all that time. Sure, you may get lucky and only need 30-40 minutes to complete your check-in/security line process, but it’s always better to have too much time rather than not enough. Get there early and save yourself the stress of sprinting through a crowded airport with your bags.

Check in online and ahead of time

Technology is a beautiful thing. The perks of smart-phones and the internet when it comes to traveling are immense. Namely, take advantage of online check-in. Checking in to your flight 24 hours before you travel by using an app or the airline’s website can save you tons of time spent waiting in long lines at the airport. Check in online, print out your ticket from home, or if you’re using an app simply open your phone and scan your boarding pass from your phone screen. No more waiting forever for check-in.

Keep your must-have items separate and within easy reach

While utilizing the carry-on service ensures that you will have everything you need when you arrive at your destination, it’s also important to have a few select items readily available to you during your flight. Preparing a little “Must Haves” bag for yourself can save you the trouble of rifling through your carry-on to find your hand sanitizer, headphones, or book. So create a small package with items such as wallet, headphones, cellphone/entertainment device (iPad, Kindle, etc.), tissue packet, ibuprofen, chapstick, and hand sanitizer/hand wipes. Personalize your package to make sure that you will have all your own creature comforts on your journey.
