Fun Things to do when traveling to Mobile Alabama

Business travelers are going to Mobile, Alabama, perhaps more than ever now. The Gulf Coast is noted for its white sand beaches, and an expanding economy entices many companies to the historical city of Mobile. Many people have misconceptions about the city of Mobile that was, in fact, the founding city of Mardi Gras, although New Orleans is more famous for the French celebration. When in town for business, make sure to take some time off for these extraordinary sights and adventures.

Start out by exploring the pristine shores. Be sure to visit Dauphin Island, which lies on three miles south of the mouth of Mobile Bay. The nearby Orange Beach and Gulf Shores provide seaside attractions and public areas where you can just kick back and watch the waves roll in.

One thing that you will not be lacking during your stay in Mobile is variety. The diverse locale offers nearly every type of restaurant you can imagine. Explore them on your own or arrange a business luncheon at one of these eateries. Although there are standard chain restaurants like Olive Garden, skip them for something that is more unique to Mobile, such as Cafe Royal, which is located in the historic Van Antwerp Building. Spot of Tea is a Victorian-style cafe that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The Sunflower Cafe at Virginia’s Health Food Stores offers a sumptuous menu for those who are more health-minded or who are seeking a variety of vegetarian fare. Busaba’s Thai Cuisine serves a Southeastern Asian menu, while Osman Restaurant serves French fare.

Since the city of Mobile is steeped in history, you will not want to miss the landmarks that can only be seen here. The USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park allows guests the opportunity to tour the decks of the ship and also to go below a World War II submarine. Tanks are preserved here as well, and tourists can see cockpits of cockpit aircraft. A plane just like those flown by Tuskegee Airmen is also on display. Keep in mind that all tours are self-guided so you may want to research the park a bit before arriving.

Mobile offers many other historical sights as well. The Portier house was once the home of the first Bishop of Mobile, and it’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Magnolia Cemetery has authentic Civil War monuments and is the resting place for 1,100 Confederate soldiers. The Bragg-Mitchell Mansion is a beautifully kept historical home. Also make the time to see Conde-Charlotte House Museum, which was once the city’s first official jail. The Oakleigh House Museum Complex includes the Cox-Deasy Creole Cottage, the Minnie Mitchell Archives, and the Oakleigh House Museum.

The Museum of Mobile offers both permanent and rotating exhibits that explore 300 years of the city’s history. It boasts artifacts, galleries, a hands-on Discovery room, and a well-appointed gift shop. It lies within a building that was created in 1857 as home to the city council.

A must-see attraction is the Bellingrath Gardens and Home. It is one of the most revered gardens in the country. It lies on 65 well-manicured acres and was originally constructed in 1935. If you are visiting during late November to early January, be sure to see the spectacular holiday light show that is an annual occasion. There are beautiful displays throughout the year. Its springtime azaleas are legendary, and guests often admire the autumn chrysanthemums as well.  The All-America Rose Selections named Bellingrath Gardens as the top rose garden in the country in 2004. The historical home that is next to the gardens is available for tours as well, and it features antiques and original furnishings.
