Europe’s Capitals in Pictures: Warsaw

Warsaw is one of Europe’s most intriguing cities and one of it’s least understood capitals. Devastated and ravaged by war, Warsaw’s historic past was rebuilt to mirror its former glory and it is a vibrant and beautiful city with plenty of wonderful architecture, parks and gardens to enjoy.

This beautiful park set in the center of the city provides an amazing escape from the hustle and bustle of Warsaw life. Centered around a Neoclassical palace, the park’s centerpiece was built by a former Polish king in the 18th century. The palace overlooks a peaceful pond and is surrounded by the tranquil confines of flower gardens and wooded groves.

Stare Miasto

Put away your ideas about Warsaw as a dilapidated, grey city ravaged by war. This, Warsaw’s charming old town center, was masterfully rebuilt in the eras following World War II and today is a vibrant cultural and shopping district with an array of charming cobblestone streets bustling with local shoppers and tourists. Take your time to explore the maze of streets, which are home to bars with cozy patios, cute shops and inviting alleyways.

This stunning castle complex was all but destroyed by German troops during the Warsaw Uprising, but tender care and magnificent rebuilding techniques have helped restore it to its former glory. Zamek Krowlewski, or the Royal Castle, was for hundreds of years the main building of the Polish Commonwealth. The interior is a gaping maze of dripping golden inlays, crystal chandeliers and brightly arched windows.

Palace of Culture and Science

This stoic structure is Poland’s tallest building and Warsaw’s most visible structure, providing a wonderful landmark around which to orient yourself while walking through the city. Once named “Joseph Stalin Palace of Culture and Science”, Stalin’s namesake was eventually removed, and today, the building serves as a public exhibition center and houses a number of offices, as well as space for theatre and cinema, as well as museums.
