Starting this coming Monday, November 1, passengers on board all American Airlines flights will be served a new, eco-friendly coffee… in a bigger cup! The airline, which has suffered under economic strain the past few years, announced yesterday that they will be gracing their customers with coffee produced by Java City, a coffee company based out of Sacramento, California.

According to the company’s Vice-President, Rob Friedman, the coffee that American will be offering through Java City is “high quality, great tasting, and ecofriendly.” Well, if that isn’t a first for the airline industry. In fairness, the coffee they will be offering is a 100% Arabica bean blend that has been approved by the Rainforest Alliance, meaning that it was grown, harvested and shipped by means that comply with international labor and environmental standards. American is also changing their cup size to a 10 oz. cup, which gives passengers a bit more (only a bit) than their previous 8 oz. styrofoam cups. In addition to obviously showing the American Airlines label, the cups will feature logos from Java City and the Rainforest Alliance, which seems to be an attempt to reassure customers about just where their coffee came from.

This is the most recent in a string of measures that American has been implementing to try to make their operation more eco-friendly. Others include trimming down the weight of their galley carts (only half of them were downsized), which will supposedly reduce their fuel consumption by 1.9 million gallons a year. They also changed to lighter water bottles, which will purportedly bring down their carbon emissions and reduce their plastic usage by 20,000 pounds a year.
