5 Fabulous Ways to Get Started Traveling

Every well traveled person in the world had to get started sometime and somewhere. We weren’t all born well traveled individuals (although some of us were, I’m sure!). No, becoming well traveled is a pursuit that takes a lifetime (if done right) and there is no time like the present to get going. Old or young, rich or poor – all kinds of people travel all the time, so there is no excuse!

If you want to get started traveling but are overwhelmed by the possibilities that the world offers, here are five tips on how to start your very own journey to see the world.

See your hometown.

If you haven’t traveled much, odds are, there is a lot that you haven’t seen right in your own hometown. Believe it or not, most well traveled people pay little attention to their own hometowns, prefering the exoticism of being far away. And while that feeling is never a bad thing, it’s also incredibly important to see and understand the place that you’re from. So, pretend that you’re a tourist in your own hometown. Read travel blogs about what is interesting there. Take a camera and try to see your city or place in a new light.

Change your outlook.

Remember that travel does not always have to equal far away, although for many, that is a big part of the allure, to be sure. Furthermore, a lot of people are hampered by their own attitudes toward travel. Statements like, “If I ever had the time…”, “Maybe someday when I’m rich” and “I’ll start planning for a trip next year” are defeatist cop-outs for lazy people! Believe me, none of us travelers are rich or have much time – we save money and make time, for you only live once and if you intend to see the world, then you better find a way to do it now!

Hop in the car.

Your car can be your ticket to travel. So you’ve always wanted to get out there and see the world? How about, this weekend, instead of chilling on the couch or going to the movies, you hop in the car and head for a place – any place – that you’ve never been. Voila! You’re traveling!

Visit a friend.

In this day and age, many people, I daresay most people, know someone that lives somewhere really cool. Whether it’s New York City, small town China or the dusty desert of the American Southwest, tap up your friends! Stay on their couches and get them to show you around their cities and places. This is a great way to save money on accommodation (which is usually one of the priciest aspects of travel), get a chance to learn something about a new place and live like a local.

Take the leap.

For some people, the only way they’ll ever do anything is to just simply do it. If you fall into that category, then the time has come for you to simply take the leap and go. It might seem scary and impossible, but I’m telling you – people do this everyday! They uproot their families, their lives and their careers for a chance to see somewhere new! If you don’t know where to start, see if your company has positions overseas, look for jobs in a new city or get your TEFL certificate and head somewhere truly exotic to teach English. The possibilities are endless – you’ve just got to get up and go.
